UNDERWORLD: Rise of the Lycans

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is an enjoyable film if not predictable since it belongs to the not-so-new Hollywood genre of prequels (thanks Mr. Lucas).  The story picks up some time before the original Underworld to tell give us more of LucianŐs background.  Also, since it focuses on LucianŐs beginnings, Lycans finally gives us the full love story between Sonja and Lucian that actually preludes the beginning of the Underworld saga.  Bill Nighy again reprises his role of Viktor and gives a strong performance (better than Evolution).  ItŐs always nice to have the original actors return to play familiar characters than to turn old familiar characters over to the next generation.

Overall, I enjoyed Lycans better than Evolution.  But then again, it's immortal vs. immortal, which sometimes gets to be a bit boring when one doesn't get to see much werewolf or vampire in a vampire/werewolf flick.  The extensive use of weapons incorporated into the battle of immortals almost seemed to be an irrelevant commentary on their ŇhumanityÓ at times, but thatŐs just a matter of opinion.  Personally, if I wanted to see a bunch of guys in black leather having a gun fight, it would have been cheaper to rent Bad Boys or the Matrix.  Ultimately, if you've seen the other Underworld films, then you have to see this one to complete the story. Lycans wasn't a waste of time but a matinee or rental would probably be the best bet for your dollar (or nine, as the case may be).  Also, if you see Lycans in the theater, make sure you view it in DLP because as previous it's shot mostly in the dark so the DLP gives better views of the action.
